Charter Parties

A charter party is a private contract for the services of a ship. It is
negotiated in a free market- very much subject to principles of
supply and demand.

I have taught the courses described below for many years.
Many of my former students are active in the charter party
market. Some have made a fortune. They are owners, charterers,
brokers, traders, among others.

I am proud that I played some part in their success.  I know that
you will find my courses very productive and enjoyable.
Most also agree that I also generate enthusiasm - and a
motivation to succeed.
Please let me tell you about my chartering  courses.

There are three courses that I teach concerning charter parties:

Charter Parties I - this course is part of the S.U.N.Y. Maritime
College Graduate Program and is a thorough examination of time
and demise charter party issues. Topics include: basic
responsibilities under the time and demise charter, hire, off-hire,
speed, consumption, seaworthiness, safe port / safe berth and
other warranties, cargo responsibilities, the Inter-Club
Agreement, bills of lading under time charters, maritime liens,
shipbrokerage practices, ethics in trading, among other topics.
Students earn three graduate level credits. The course is
routinely offered in the Fall semester at the Maritime College
Graduate School's lower Manhattan location.

Charter Parties II provides a comprehensive examination of
voyage charter party issues such as freight, deadfreight, arrival,
laytime, demurrage and despatch. The course covers many
additional topics such as the laycan, expected readiness to load,
special issues pertaining to tankers such as Worldscale, general
average under the charter party, cargo considerations, maritime
arbitration, among numerous others. Students earn three
graduate level credits. The course is routinely offered during the
Spring semester at the Maritime College Graduate School's  lower
Manhattan location.
The Association of Shipbrokers and Agents (USA) and Maritime
College jointly issue a Certificate upon satisfactory completion of
both courses.

I also teach a course entitled
Shipbroking and Chartered Vessel
Operations
on behalf of the Association of Shipbrokers and
Agents (USA). This course is taught entirely "on line" via the
internet .   ASBA issues a Chartering Certificate upon satisfactory
completion of this course.
This comprehensive course covers the time, demise, and voyage
charter party.  Full details can be obtained by visiting the ASBA
web site- please click to visit  ASBA at
